It’s no secret that missing persons of color get significantly less media attention than cases involving white people. It’s frustrating and infuriating how often Googling a missing black or brown person’s name yields no results. In my experience, when we do hear about missing persons of color, it’s often due to the efforts of a vigilant and outspoken family determined to keep their loved ones’ cases in the headlines. But even then, the coverage rarely crosses state (or even county) lines.

As I often say when writing about missing people, I believe so many cases could be solved if only the right person saw the right bit of information. This is why today, I’m bringing you four missing persons of color who disappeared in the first half of 2019:

Jordan Corey Butler-Turner

I can find very little about Jordan Butler-Turner‘s case. The 24-year-old was last seen on May 23, 2019 just north of New York City in New Rochelle, New York. According to NamUs, Butler-Turner planned to pick up a prescription before heading into Manhattan to hang out, anticipated to return home the same day. He’s been missing since. Butler-Turner usually traveled via public transport, and likely took the 6 train or an MTA bus into the city, if he made it out of Westchester County.

This case was entered into NamUs by the New Rochelle Police Department on May 31, 2019, but that’s literally all I’ve been able to find about it. No news articles, no missing persons alerts, nada.

Jonathan Faiyah Bandabaila

19-year-old Jonathan Bandabaila was last seen leaving his family home in the Fruitvale area of Oakland on May 3, 2019. At around 1:30 AM the next day, his 1998 Honda Accord was found parked on the San Mateo-Hayward Bridge. No sign of Bandabaila has been seen since.

Although the Oakland PD has not publicly speculated on what they think happened, the Bandabaila family reports feeling like the case didn’t receive a sufficiently-urgent response, and that investigators quickly deemed it a suicide “as if there was a rush to judgment just to close the case.” However, police told the San Francisco Chronicle that they are still actively investigating the case and sharing information with the family as it arises. Regardless, the family is obviously frustrated and desperate, and recently reached out to the public for help in locating their son and brother.

Prisma Denisse Peralta Reyes

26-year-old Prisma Reyes was reported missing by her babysitter when she failed to pick up her six-year-old son after work on April 17, 2019. Sometime later, her car was found 15 miles away, abandoned in a Dallas apartment complex’s parking garage, according to People. She was last seen on surveillance footage entering the parking garage.

Reyes was originally from Mexico, but had recently become a US citizen. Her son is currently being cared for by family members, who say the disappearance is incredibly out-of-character. After watching the security camera footage, her stepfather said she looked distraught, saying “the way she was floundering her arm, her lanyard, her keys. It’s just a trait that she has.”

On May 21, her family offered up a $2500 reward for any information about Reyes’s disappearance.

Keyonna Denaye Cole

27-year-old Keyonna Cole was last seen walking down Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd in Brooksville, Florida at around 11 PM on February 10, 2019. On February 11, Cole was slated to speak to investigators about the case against Dwayne Williams, who allegedly attempted to strangle Cole to death while she was pregnant in October 2018, which ultimately resulted in the death of her five-month-old fetus.

When Cole no-showed to speak to investigators, they immediately suspected foul play. Cole reported receiving multiple threats after her attempted murder, and always made sure to check-in with friends or family members. She left behind a three-year-old son, who is in the care of family members. Although Dwayne Williams has not been identified as a person of interest in Cole’s disappearance, her family believe he is involved.
